The FunHoMic 1st Autumn School will take place from the 21st to the 25th of october 2019 at HKI, Jena.
FunHoMic's 13 ESRs will have the opportunity to acquire both scientific and soft (transferable) skills through different workshops:
Research workshop: “Fungal pathogens and their interaction with the host – epidemiology, pathogenesis, immunology and infection models”
Lectures, practicals and tutorials will be given by Partners and several invited clinical and academic experts: Oliver Kurzai, Donna MacCallum, Robin May and Alexander Mosig.
Key aspects: (1) Fungal infections, diagnosis, antifungal mode-of-action and resistance; (2) Molecular mycology (fungal pathogenesis; population genomics; genome dynamics); (3) Fungal immunology (principles of immunity; fungal recognition and control; genetic susceptibility to infection; (4) Infection models, ethical considerations, the 3Rs and alternative approaches (e.g. in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo approaches, including 3D organoids), data acquisition and statistical analysis.
“Transferable skill” workshop: Personal Development Plans
Lecture by Partners and Discussion Sessions
Aim: Prepare our ESRs for FunHoMic monitoring processes
Topics: Personal Development Plans (PDPs); the responsibility to manage their own project, career aspirations and progress; issues relating to scientific misconduct, plagiarism, etc.
“Transferable skill” workshop: Time and project management
Lecture by Partners, and Discussion Sessions
Aim: Help our ESRs increase their productivity
Topics: Project management; defining the vision of the project; medium & short term planning; developing organizational skills; managing tasks, minimizing procrastination; monitoring progress; achieving closure.
“Transferable skill” workshop: Public outreach, Open science, Influencing policy-makers
Discussion, Lecture, Case Studies, Q&A Session by Partners and invited speakers: Laura Bowater and Daria Julkowska
Aim: Train our ESRs in the art of communicating their research to the public, the media and policy makers.
Topics: public perceptions of science and animal research; communication strategies; influencing policy makers; preparation of specific plans for public outreach, including social media, schools programmes, science festivals.
